Discontinuous (non-sinusoidal) current such as those generated by a phase angle fired SCR and zero crossing controllers and pulse wave modulation (PWM) technologies typically require measurements to be taken with a true RMS-measuring transducer. A true RMS transducer typically samples the incoming current at a frequency much higher than the line frequency. Each sample is squared. The number of samples are summed then divided by the number of samples. The square root of that result is taken as the root mean square value. Typical OSI transducers that employ RMS measuring circuitry include the following models:
