Monitoring Phase Fired Heaters

June 16, 2017
Ohio Semitronics recently received a request from a customer about measuring the current of their Phase Angle Fired controller in order to feed a signal to their PLC and external display.

Before reaching out to OSI, the attempt to use a current transformer and a hand held clamp-on meter was made. Their meter ended up reading much higher than the actual current. They began to wonder how to get a more accurate reading.

The solution we suggested was simple. Use an RMS transducer, with an analog output, that would connect to the display meter and PLC. An average sensing transducer cannot correctly measure waveform.
