Control Engineering 2017 Engineers' Choice Awards

Out of 116 entries, and across 28 categories, Ohio Semitronics' WPM-4839 Wide-Band Power Meter was chosen as a 2017 Engineers' Choice Awards Finalist in the category of Hardware- Data Acquisition. The voting ballot for each category was open to Control Engineering North American print and digital edition subscribers through the months of October and December. The winner for each category, and honorable mentions for the runner-up positions, is said to be announced in February of 2017.

WPM-4839 Wide-Band Power Meter

The WPM-4839 Wide-Band Power Meter is an accurate, economical energy measurement system for variable frequency drive applications. The Department of Energy (DoE) issued changes to the measurement requirements for determining pump energy for equipment driven by electric variable frequency drives. A NOPR EERE-2014BT-TP-0054 was also issued requiring similar revisions to the standards for electrically driven air-compressors.

Overall, the new standards issued by DoE requires accurate measurement of the input power up to at least the 40th harmonic of 60Hz. The WPM allows for remote reading with simple commands in an open protocol, accurate 0.25% of reading energy measurement up to the 40th harmonic of 60Hz, and this device features simple RS-232, RS-422, RS-485 or USB interfaces (used with a simple ASCII communication protocol). To view the spec sheet for the WPM-4839 visit Wide-Band Power Meter Specification Sheet.

The WPM was tested with 40th harmonic energy equal to 10% of the total energy with no significant deterioration in measurement accuracy. This was achieved by impressing 40th harmonic equal to 10% of the total on both the current and voltage signals. The WPM exceeded the DoE requirements by a wide safety margin.
